1. Opening
prayer
2. Updates
a.
Fr. Angel (Zamboanga-Basilan)
a. Current Mindanao issue is “all up
in the air”, with the campaign of rejection
(Yes to Peace, no to BJE) resurrecting old
feelings and which puts peace groups in a
further difficult situation.
b. PCP chapter in Mindanao is working on different
areas on peace-building like the module on
Peace Education with the Catholic Relief Services
(CRS) started in the (Zamboanga, Basilan,
Sulu and Tawi-Tawi) ZAMBASULI area (10 months
every year among grassroots communities),
Dan Pantoja’s “Coffee for Peace”
and preparing for the Week of Peace in the
last week of November with the theme, “Integrity
of Heart and Soul as Basis for Reconciliation
and Peace” (taken from Muslim leaders’
letter to the Pope, “A World Among Us”)
b.
Philip Anghag (Davao)
a. Deng Guiguiento currently in East Timor
while Karen is involved with IP-Youth.
b. After the Bacolod GA, Bishop Ledesma’s
presentation inspired a series of dialogues
between Muslim-Christian youth; now in a second
series of workshops on “Resources for
Peace”
c. The MOA-AD issue also raises 3 gray areas
which need to be further clarified and discussed:
the security aspect, the humanitarian aspect
and the indigenous people’s rights aspect
and the implications from these raised a need
for convergence and a serious reflection and
discussion on the agenda of identity. “Ancestral
domain” is not just about the terminal
definition by IPRA; the Islamic concept covers
more than just the terminal definition.
d. With the MOA scrapped, things are back
to square one. The civil society network’s
position is to work with the current situation
but the current focus is too much on critique
and no one is talking about options and solutions,
which also need to be addressed.
e. German, Canadian and Australian nationals
have been officially advised by their embassies
not to travel to Mindanao.
c.
Jack Pamine (Negros)
a. Bishop Gerry Alminaza, a Pax Christi member,
has just been ordained as auxiliary bishop
of Jaro, Iloilo.
b. Context for
Pax Christi Negros: ANV is not an issue; the
challenge is of asserting identity as Pax
Christi; even among the clergy there is a
division between those who are perceived as
reformists but basically upholding the status
quo, and those who are revolutionaries; this
applies similarly to peace groups in Negros.
In one diocese in San Carlos, PSPN ( a local
peace group) is the only peace group entertained
by them.
c. Current concern in Negros is focused on
addressing the rice crisis, with social action
centers airing the need for more rice distribution
outlets, even as the Metro Bacolod Chamber
of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) lobbying
for the planting of more sorghum (for food)
and jethropa (for oil) among landowners.
d. There is also a move in the Bidding and
Awards Committee of the City Hall to include
a church member in their Committee.
